You could maybe have a go at creating your own compass directions map with some questions about it like the treasure island one.

This week I would like you to find out which flavour cake you are going to make your design from. 
To do this you could make some basic buns and then add various flavours to them to decide which is your favourite. You could even ask other members of your family which they like best and do a vote to decide which is their favourite.

Here is a recipe for a basic bun mixture :
8 oz self raising flour
8 oz baking magarine
8 oz sugar
1 teaspoon of vanilla essence
1 tablespoon of boiling water
4 large eggs

Method

• cream together the margarine and sugar
• mix in the 4 eggs and vanilla essence
• add in the flour slowly
• add the boiling water
• put bun cases in a tin and fill each case half full of the mixture
• bake in oven 180 degrees F for 17 minutes

This mixture will make up to 24 buns depending on size of cases.

To change the flavour replace the vanilla essence with a different flavour eg: orange, lemon, coffee.

You don't have to use the recipe you may have recipes of your own that you could use.

After this you should know the flavour cake or cakes you are going to use for your design.

Story: As some children return to school, we think about how our routines have changed during this time.

Question: How important is it to have a routine?

Ongoing project

This half term we thought it would be nice to do some research about an aspect of our local area. We decided that the 3 churches and their history would be a great project. We would like you to find out about them and present your work in an interesting,exciting way. We particularly would like you to look at how each church is similar /different. You could maybe talk to people who attend these churches and ask them what it is like and the things that happen during their services. Find out about the Catholic, Anglican and Methodist branches of the Christian faith. They will have things that are the same and some things which are very different.You could maybe do a painting/drawing or model of one of them too. 

You could also included Selby Abbey, as this is a fabulous building with so much history.

Mystery eggs in collaboration corner

Jack has been doing some investigation work today in school trying to find out which type of bird laid the eggs found in the abandoned nest in collaboration corner.

We think they may well be red legged partridge.

Leila's geography fun

Leila and her Dad are loving the geography topic. They are challenging each other with symbol recognition and grid references. She has also set us a cycling orientation course to Drax.

Black lives matter!

What’s going on? 

There have been several nights of protests and violent clashes between police and protestors as demonstrations have swept across cities in the US and other cities around the world. The protests in Minneapolis began in reaction to the death of a man named George Floyd after he was stopped by police officers. The protests have now spread across the country to cities including New York, LA, Chicago and Philadelphia. While many protests have been peaceful, many places have seen rioting, looting and violence and President Trump has said he will call in the army if things aren't brought back under control.
 Question: What does Black Lives Matter mean?

 Listen, think, share  

• Look at the poster image, are you aware of the protests currently taking place in America and in other cities around the world? Explain that many people are angry about the unfairness and mistreatment of how black African American citizens are treated by the police and in other situations within their lives. They want to raise awareness of racism and are trying to change the opinions and actions of others. As some of the protests have turned violent, they have caused divided opinion. Some people believe that more peaceful methods should be used to help educate and initiate change.  
•  Explain that many people in America feel the police and the justice system treat black people unfairly compared to how they treat white people. African Americans are five times more likely to be sent to jail than white Americans. Does this surprise us? Have we head of the Black Lives Matters movement? Explain that the recent protests have brought the ongoing movement to the forefront of peoples’ attention all around the world. The movement campaigns against violence and racism and fights for equality for black people around the world, starting in 2013.
• Read through the experience of American author Shola Richards found on the resource. What can it teach us about the effects of racism on his daily life? Does any of his experience surprise us? Why do you think he wanted to share his story at this time? Resource link

• On Tuesday 2nd June, millions of people around the world shared a plain black image as part of ‘Black Tuesday’, a global event to protest against racial inequality.  Organisers behind the movement asked people to, post a picture of a black square on their social media account, mute their account for the day and use the time they would otherwise be on social media to educate themselves on Black Lives Matter.  
• Watch the video (link found below). Do we think Blackout Tuesday was an effective way to raise awareness? What do you think the benefits are for pausing and using the time to learn? Can you think of any other ways to raise awareness about an issue we care about?  

Reflection 

Black Lives Matter and Blackout Tuesday are movements to both raise awareness and educate people about racial inequalities around the world. Racism is something we can all learn about and find out ways that we can support and promote equality for all. 

Challenge 

Can you find out about and create a fact file from a person influential to the black civil rights movement e.g. Rosa Parks or Martin Luther King?

FOREST SCHOOL ACTIVITY

Mrs Gay has found this lovely activity which you may like to have a go at.

Make a spider web catcher

Some people are afraid of spiders but they help us by eating insect pests and are fascinating creatures to what watch., especially when spinning intricate webs! You can safely get close to one by creating your own web catcher.

You will need
3 medium sized straight twigs
1 longer stick
String or elastic band

1. Create a triangle shape with the twigs and secure the corners with the string or elastic bands
2. Attach the longer stick to the triangle in one corner and find an area in your garden to stick your web catcher in, preferably near a Bush or plant. The best time to check your web catcher is in the morning.

I would love to see any pictures of the spiders and webs that use your catchers, you could make a note of their markings to help identify them!
